The LCK 2020 Summer Split Playoffs are going to begin on Aug. 26 with the wildcard matchup, according to Korizon’s Ashley Kang.
The Playoffs will end on September 5, as the Finals will crown a Korean champion. Three other playoff matches will be played in order to decide who faces Korea’s number one seed from the regular season. That spot is currently held by DRX. The LCK 2020 Summer Split Playoffs will follow a King of the Hill format, one that the region has used historically.
It’s currently unknown if the league plans to have an audience for playoffs. It’s unlikely given that the LCK has gone forward with no in-person attendance to all events in their studio though.
The regional qualifiers, or more commonly known as the gauntlet, will begin on Sept. 7, just two days after the finals. The gauntlet will end on Sep. 9, giving teams enough time to prepare for travel to China for Worlds.
The LCK is set to finish their regular season this week. Four teams have already stamped their ticket to playoffs. The fifth and final seed is still up for grabs with Afreeca Freecs and KT Rolster both competing for the spot. KT and Afreeca will play each other in a pivotal match this week. The teams that are currently locked for playoffs are DRX, Damwon, T1, and Gen.G.
With most of the premiere regions across the world moving into a franchising model, the LCK will be doing the same in 2021. With that, no promotion series will be played between the bottom two LCK and top two CK teams following this split.
The LCK returns on Thursday Aug. 20 and will end the regular season on Aug. 23.
